Material of shelf; 5 most common types of material

Cabinet shelves are available in many types of material. It depends on your personal preference and budget. The five most common materials used for a closet shelf are:

1. Pinewood joinery panel

Pinewood joinery panel is mainly used for making indoor furniture. It is a solid wood panel and has a warm and natural look because the wood grain is visible. Perfect material for making a made-to-measure cupboard shelf!

Spruce wood has a light colour whereby the knots and flames are striking. In comparison with pine wood, spruce is slightly lighter in colour and weight. Spruce is a somewhat softer type of wood and odourless. Processing and treatment of lumber panels

Pinewood is easy to work with. You can finish it with a clear varnish or stain, but also with a coloured varnish for a more opaque result. The lumber panel has minimal movement, which is a nice feature when used for a cabinet shelf.

2. Pine joinery panel

Carpentry Panel Pine is, just like Carpentry Panel Spruce, mainly used for making furniture indoors, for example as cupboard shelves. It is also a solid wood panel and has a warm and natural appearance because the wood grain is visible.

Pine wood has a light colour whereby the knots and flames are prominent. In comparison to pine, pine is slightly more yellowish in colour and slightly heavier in weight.

Machining and treatment of carpentry panels

Compared to pine, pine is a somewhat tougher type of wood, which makes it easier to work. When working pine a specific smell is released, but this soon disappears. You can finish the pine cupboard board with a clear varnish or stain, but also with a coloured varnish for a more opaque result.

Pine or pine joinery panel, which do you choose?

Will you choose Pine or Pine Cladding Panel? The materials look almost identical, although Pine Lumber Panel is slightly yellower and the price is slightly higher. It therefore depends on your personal preference which of the two types of wood you choose for your made-to-measure cupboard shelf.

3. Furniture panel white

Furniture panel White already has it in the name; it is ideal for use in making furniture such as cupboards and shelves. Furniture panel consists of chipboard with a plastic layer (melamine) pressed onto both sides. The long sides are also finished with a plastic layer (edge banding). Very nice for a made-to-measure cupboard shelf! This plastic layer makes the board immediately ready for use, it does not need to be painted!

Different formats

Furniture panels are available in many different formats. This is due to the edge banding on at least one long side. Seven different widths are available: 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 80 cm.

Example

Would you like to buy a custom-made cabinet shelf at TOSIZE.lu? Then order it with millimetre precision in our webshop. In the ordering module, choose 'Rectangle Sawn' and enter the dimensions. For example, do you have a shelf with dimensions 46.0 cm by 50.0 cm? Then enter 46.0 for the length (long side) and 50.0 for the width (short side). Using the correct width of the furniture panel saves a lot of time when finishing the ends of the shelves.

Machining furniture panel as cabinet shelf

Using white furniture panel as a shelf has the great advantage that it is immediately ready for use. The white layer does not need to be painted, the plastic layer makes this even more difficult. It is possible to paint, but then you must first use a special primer. In our sawmill, we handle the material with care, so that we can deliver it to you beautifully and tightly sawn.

4. Chipboard White Laminated

The variant of furniture panel which is not finished at the ends is Chipboard Laminated White. You can clearly see that the inside of the material consists of chipboard. These edges can be finished with edge banding. This is very nice when you choose this material for making made-to-measure cupboard shelves.

Chipboard White Melamine Laminated is available in larger formats and also in a thickness of 10 mm.

Machining chipboard as a cabinet shelf

In the case of chipboard white melamine, as with the white furniture panel, a synthetic layer (melamine) is glued to both sides of the panel. This plastic layer makes the board immediately ready for use, it does not need to be painted.

Furniture panel white or chipboard white melamine?

Will you choose cabinet shelves made of furniture panel or particle board? The difference in price is minimal! A major advantage of furniture panel is that the edges are already finished with edge banding. It saves a lot of time if you don't have to do this yourself! So the choice is quickly made!

5. MDF paint carrier

Made-to-measure cupboard shelves from MDF are also a good option. MDF is available in many varieties, including MDF lacquer finish. MDF lacquer-bearing is provided on both sides with a lacquer-bearing film that makes priming the shelves unnecessary. MDF is one of the most popular types of board material. This is because it is very easy to process and also very affordable.

Processing MDF as a cabinet shelf

MDF is very easy to work with: when milling and sawing, the material does not splinter. The lacquer carrier film works as a primer, which means that you can immediately start lacquering the material. The film greatly reduces the suction effect of the material. The foil is applied on both sides, so that the risk of warping of the shelves is minimal. It is therefore very suitable if you want to lacquer the cupboard shelves. The ends still require extra attention. To counteract the absorbing effect of the ends, there are various possibilities: use diluted wood glue with a little water, putty or a special edge sealant. Unieke kastplanken maken

Earlier in this article we described the 5 most common materials used for a custom-made cupboard shelf. If you're thinking out-of-the-box, choose for example a Plywood shelf in Poplar (primed) or Birch. This material has a natural look and feel and is often used in the current Scandinavian trend. The combination of wood, white and greyish colours characterise this trend. This is easy to apply when you make your own shelves.

Also Underlayment Finnish Spruce or OSB 3 are suitable materials and give your shelves a unique look.

Edge trim

At TOSIZE.lu we can saw your customised shelf directly into the right size. We can also provide an edge finish. Made-to-measure cupboard shelves with stickers and upholstery

Cupboard shelves can be fully personalised by covering them with adhesive film or interior stickers. Covering bespoke cupboard shelves is a precise job that requires a lot of patience. But the result is worth it! Search for adhesive film for wooden shelves online, for example at the adhesive film webshop. They also offer a wide range of interior stickers.

Adhesive film for shelf

We have a few tips for attaching adhesive film to shelves:

  • Make sure you have enough working space and good access to the cupboard shelves.
  • Check the correct size and mark it off.
  • Use a new knife or sharp scissors when cutting or trimming the material. Stick the foil onto the cabinet shelf and smooth it down evenly. If a small bubble does form under the plastic, prick it with a small needle to release the air.
