MDF primed: what is it?
MDF primed is provided on both sides with a primer, which eliminates the need to prime the material, which means you can get started with the desired colour of paint or varnish right away. So, it is very suitable for making furniture for indoor use that you want to paint and when you want to get started on your project quickly. MDF is one of the most popular types of wooden sheets. This is because it is easy to process and also affordable.
Not sure which MDF variant is right for you, but are you planning on painting or lacquering your project? Then opt for MDF primed or MDF film. MDF primed has a somewhat rougher top layer compared to MDF film. It is important to sand this sheet material well before finishing it. Sanding makes degreasing less important, but it may also be necessary. The edges of this sheet material are not finished and do not have this white layer. Finish the edges with an edge sealer before you start painting the sheet. Are you going to spray your wooden sheet? Then MDF film is the best choice.
MDF primed is a structural sheet. This means that this sheet material still needs the necessary finishing before it can be used for visual applications. This sheet is not suitable for applications in humid areas or outdoors.
MDF primed is a versatile sheet that is suitable for all sorts of interior panelling. The homogeneous structure makes MDF less sensitive to shrinkage and expansion at varying temperatures compared to other sheet materials. However, MDF film is not suitable for applications in humid areas or outdoors. An MDF sheet is composed of dried wood fibres and glue. These wood fibres are then pressed together under high pressure and temperatures to form an MDF sheet.
Primed top layer
MDF Primed, the name says it all, is finished with a primer layer. Board material with a primed top layer offers immediate time savings and an improved finish, as the material is already pre-treated. Moreover, it is cost-saving. It is a practical and efficient choice when you want to finish your project quickly. However, bear in mind that the edges are not finished and the primer layer still needs to be sanded.
In principle, board material with a primer coating can be painted immediately. It is suitable for all paints: acrylic (water-based) and alkyd (turpentine-based). Do you want to enjoy your paintwork for longer or will the surface be used intensively? Then first apply a primer layer before applying the final coat.
Available thicknesses of MDF primed
MDF can be ordered in different thicknesses. You can easily specify your desired thickness during the ordering process. This way you can be sure that the sheet material meets your requirements: both the size and thickness of the material. The following thicknesses are available: 9 mm, 12 mm, 16 mm, 18 mm, 30 mm and 38 mm.
Machining MDF primed sheets
MDF is easy to work with: when milling and sawing, the material does not splinter. MDF natural has an absorbent effect, which makes it important to properly pre-treat the material with a primer before you varnish it. The sheet edges require some extra attention. To counteract the absorbent effect of the sheet edges, there are several possibilities: use diluted wood glue with some water, putty or a special edge sealer.
Specific applications of MDF primed
MDF is the material of choice for furniture and interior applications. This can be a cabinet, a wall or perhaps a complete conversion. Start your project with MDF.
