MDF Water-resistant HPL U128 CST Stone grey: what is that?
As the name suggests, furniture panels are mainly used to produce furniture. In this case, it is a carrier board just HPL top layer. HPL furniture panels are widely used in the furniture industry and are gaining ground due to the versatile textures, colours and options in terms of top layers. The advantage of HPL panel material, compared to melaminated, is that it contains all the properties of melamine but with greater strength.
Furniture panels with melamine are already very resilient, but the production method and high density of HPL give the material even stronger properties. An HPL top layer is water-repellent, scratch-resistant, easy to wipe off with a cloth and to some extent heat-resistant. Properties that are very pleasant in any interior application where intensive use and wear play a major role.
In brief, the advantages of HPL board material:
- Ready to use immediately
- Strong and water-repellent
- Fixed colour
- Wide choice of colours and textures
- One-to-one colour match with ABS and melamine
- Scratch and impact resistant
HPL & melamine: what's the difference?
We see the terms HPL and melamine widely used with furniture panels. Both top layers are plastic and are composed by computer, which, compared to veneers, gives the manufacturer better control over colour and texture. But what distinguishes these two common top layers from each other? We list it for you.
HPL
HPL stands for High Pressure Laminate. It is made by pressing several layers of paper together with a thermosetting synthetic resin. HPL is thicker than melamine, making the material scratch- and impact-resistant. Outdoors, we often see HPL as cladding for buildings. This is because of the durable properties HPL brings. Its high UV-resistance, impact-resistant and water-repellent properties make HPL ideal for this type of application. Outdoor situations do involve HPL compact boards whose panel consists of only HPL to ensure durability in extreme conditions.
But HPL can also be an excellent choice for indoor situations. In indoor situations, we often see HPL used in combination with melamine on a carrier board. For example, you can think of a bathroom cabinet whose frame is done in a carrier with melamine and the doors in carrier with HPL. This combination is then mainly determined based on the intensity of use of the components. So why don't we make the entire piece of furniture out of HPL you are probably wondering? For one simple reason: The price. Although HPL is very durable and universal in use, it does come with a heftier price tag compared to melamine.
Melamine
Melamine is a popular choice when it comes to decorative top coatings. Compared to veneer, it has the advantage of being ready to use immediately and easy to keep clean. In addition, melamine has high UV resistance and can tolerate a bit more than veneer. Melamine almost always has a pure colour pairing with HPL and ABS bands in the same product line. So they can be seamlessly combined in terms of colour and texture.
The choice of melamine is often determined by two factors: price and convenience. The material ensures that entire rooms can often be finished in no time and it requires little or no maintenance. Melamine is generally a cheaper solution than most veneers and HPL boards. However, melamine is also less strong than HPL and therefore not suitable for worktops, for example.
Melamine is mainly used as wall cladding, bathroom or kitchen frames, shelves or TV furniture. For any application where there is no intensive touch or friction and decorative properties are an important factor, melamine is the right choice. By combining melamine with HPL, beautiful but also very practical furniture can be built.

But there are many more!
Carrier made of Water-resistant MDF
This furniture panel has MDF Water-resistant as its backing. Water-resistant MDF is a powerhouse and very versatile. The material does not splinter, has high bending strength and has a hard pressing. MDF is stronger than chipboard, and lasts longer. MDF Water-resistant has a harder and longer pressing density than regular MDF. This makes this panel especially suitable as cabinet doors for damp rooms or in the kitchen.
A sustainable choice
MDF Water-resistant board material is considered a sustainable choice. Fibre (wood dust) is pressed together with resin to form a stable board. The quality depends on the pressing pressure and pressing time. We supply only high-quality MDF with water-resistant properties.

Machining MDF boards with an HPL top layer
The core of this board material is MDF Water-resistant. MDF Water-resistant is easy to work and assemble. If you mill or saw MDF Water-resistant, the material will not splinter, but because of the HPL top layer, machining requires a little more attention. Sharp and fine-toothed tools are important. It is generally said that HPL and hardwood require the same machining. So a metal drill or saw will do but special HPL drills are also available. In any case, leave the sawing to us, so you are guaranteed a tight result! Sawing does leave the edges 'open'. These still need to be finished, which can be done with ABS tape.
HPL is a finished top layer. The advantage of this is that you don't need to paint or finish it. Therefore, plan the assembly in advance: the joints are more difficult to hide afterwards. Think of mounting from the bottom or the inside so that screw holes and fastening points are not or less visible.
Specific applications of MDF water-resistant with an HPL top layer
MDF Water-resistant with an HPL top layer is the material of choice for furniture and interior applications. Its homogeneous structure makes MDF Water-resistant less susceptible to shrinking and expanding at changing temperatures than other board materials. Thanks to the special bonding, MDF Water-resistant is extremely suitable for rooms where humidity is a determining factor. The HPL top layer ensures that the panel is impact and scratch-resistant. HPL can withstand intensive use and is therefore suitable not only for decorative applications, but also for worktops, for example.
MDF Water-resistant with an HPL top layer ideally suited for tabletops, kitchen cabinets, countertops and desktops. It is very popular for making furniture in general. So don't be limited by this list of examples!
