Solid oak timber board rustic: what is it?
Oak is known as a hard wood species. If you treat the wood well, it will last for years. Oak has a light-brown colour that can be made darker by staining, varnishing or oiling it. Oak owes its popularity to its coarse flames and the warm appearance of the material. The wood used in our sheets comes from Ukraine, where the best wood is selected to make this sheet material. An oak sheet is also called an oak timber board, although it is not finished on the sheet edges as standard. An oak board three-layer means that the panel consists of three crosswise glued layers. The top layer is a veneer layer consisting of one piece of solid wood, the core of the sheet is composed of small solid slats of the same type of wood.
Oak, like several other solid wooden sheets, will warp with temperature differences and in humid conditions. It is important to always treat the oak evenly with a lacquer, stain or oil to prevent warping. Oak is very popular because of its special colour and beautiful grain and can therefore often be seen in the home. This type of wood can also be used outdoors, provided it is properly treated.

To create a solid wood oak board, small planks are sawn from the wood (slats), which are then glued together and finger jointed. Finger jointing involves milling a figure at the ends of the slats so that the slats can be firmly glued together. To be able to make a sheet of a larger size, several slats are combined into one large sheet. This results in a very solid and strong sheet. The result is a solid wooden sheet that is visibly composed of several small slats. These slats run in the longitudinal direction of the sheet. Keep in mind that no slat has the same appearance. The wood structure and colour of each slat is unique and can therefore also deviate from the image. Our solid sheets are interior bonded, which means that the material can only be used indoors.
The direction of the wood grain
Timber board has a visible wood grain. The wood grain pattern always runs in the longitudinal direction. When sawing the sheet, we maintain that the longitudinal dimension is also the longitudinal direction of the wood grain. So be careful when filling in the measurements, so that the flames of the wood grain all run in the right direction!.
Available thicknesses of solid oak timber board
Solid timber boards can be ordered in various thicknesses. You can easily specify your desired thickness during the ordering process. This way you can be sure that the sheet material meets your requirements: both the size and thickness of the material. The following thicknesses are available: 19 mm, 26 mm and 40 mm.
Machining solid oak timber board
It is important to finish this board with a protective varnish or stain. This increases the durability of the board. Always sand solid wooden sheets with a fine grain before you start working with it. The sanding of oak provides a beautiful result, so the details of the grain pattern stand out even more. Which benefits the robust, cool sheet. If you want to saw or mill the material, keep in mind that it may splinter. Finally, we recommend that only stainless steel is used for bonding with metal to prevent discolouration on the wood.
After the sheet has been sanded, it is important to treat the oak well with a lacquer, stain or oil.
Specific applications of solid oak timber board
Oak can be used for various applications. Bring the industrial look into your home by ordering an oak tabletop and fitting a steel base underneath. You can also pimp your current furniture by mounting a wooden top on it; think of a desk, TV cabinet or maybe a kitchen top!
In addition to sawing the material to size with millimetre accuracy, you can also choose from a variety of shapes and finishes. For example, if you have a round dining table in mind, choose the 'circle' shape, or opt for a rectangle with rounded corners. See the available shapes and finishes that apply to the product or see all the possibilities on the shapes or finishes page.
